How to Replace an audi a3 keys G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can trigger spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails the ECU will show a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However, the error code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test because there are several pins on the connector and they all have different functions. The best way to do it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms if the sensor Audi A1 Key is operating at its maximum. Check for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed, audi lost Key i noticed a huge decrease in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were drenched in gasoline and the 4th was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole, and when I start the engine without sparks, the 3 that have gazoline pop right out. The fourth one remains shut. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found 0ohm. I'm assuming the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when it is unplugged, shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I'm not certain what to do, as i feel i have pretty much eliminated everything else. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. Please let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pumansmission to malfunction and other car components to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located near the edge of the transmission, over the flywheel ring. It sends a signal via an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU is then able to process the signal to control fuel, timig and boost and then transmitting it to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for any failure by checking the continuity between it and the tachometer, between the ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) and between T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should see approximately 1000 ohms resistance between those two pins. This is a standard part across the audi tt key case 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC through the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU. Good ones could be available in wrecking yards.
