Before Toto was formed, members of the band performed sessions for other musicians. In 1985, Fergie Frederiksen, Toto's drummer, quit the group due to personal reasons. Toto decided to hold an audition and ultimately chose Joseph Williams to replace Frederiksen.

Before and during Toto's formation the members of the group worked as session musicians for a wide range of artists. Toto was formed following Jeff Porcaro, bassist David Hungate and Boz Scaggs recorded Silk Degrees. Paich played keyboards on Steely Dan's records, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.

In 1998, Toto started working on a project entitled Old Is New. The album featured three new tracks as well as several recordings of older songs. The album was a global success and the band went on tours to promote it.
