Components

Upgrade components make your armour and weapons better. They can be found by destroying enemies, buying them from karma sellers or finding them in item-spheres. Upgrade components are mostly used to upgrade an item however, they can also be used for other reasons. They can be used to boost the value of an item upgrader kit that can be upgraded or they can be used to boost the experience gained when upgrading an existing weapon or piece of gear. They can be made for additional bonuses. A glyph that has been crafted can increase the chance of upgrading its target while an upgrade boosts the attack or defense attributes of weapons.

By selecting an upgrade template from the GUI will let you bind it to an item. This will show the upgrade components that the item can be upgraded. Alternatively, you can use the workbench to select an upgrade template. In either scenario, an item will be upgraded after enough upgrade components have been collected.

Each component has a different experience multiplier that affects how much more experience an item gets when it is upgraded by the component. For instance, organic components offer a higher experience multiplier than mechanical ones. It is therefore best to upgrade using organic components until you reach the experience multiplier of the next level of the equipment or weapon, and then change to mechanical upgrades.

In addition to the multiplier of experience every item also has a maximum number of upgrades that it can receive. The number of upgradeable items is determined by their upgradeable rank and the kind of upgrade they are able to receive. The most powerful upgrade is a weapon of tier 10. The most commonly used upgrade is a gun with tier 6 and a armor upgrade of tier 5.

Sets

A set is a collection of items that have bonuses. Each item in the set can be upgraded at least one time, and the upgrade increases its guaranteed bonuses. The first time you upgrade an item or set piece is that it will be given a +1 increase to its primary stat. On subsequent upgrades the stats of the primary one will be increased a bit further (for instance, +1 to 12+/13+/14+), and each time you upgrade the item upgrader mod, as well as its current base ilvl.
