Item upgrading allows players to improve their weapons and equipment with new affixes, increasing its base stats or adding additional perks. To upgrade an item, a player has to have it in their inventory and have access to the kiln.

Typically items with weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a stronger base while items with strong bases such as Eth titans don't change significantly in their stats after being upgraded.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components can be slotted into trinkets, weapons, armor and gathering tools, giving an attribute bonus or additional effect while the equipment is being used. They can be bought from vendors, or found in loot, thrown away by enemies or received as a reward from missions or chests. Certain upgrades also have cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be above a certain level before they can be upgraded.

In order to upgrade a weapon or piece of armor, the player must select it, and then click on the Upgrade button on the toolbar. This will display a preview on the right side of the screen showing what the expected upgrade stats will be, as well as the material or component needed for the upgrade to take place.

There are three types of upgrade components including universal upgrades, prefix upgrades, and suffix upgrades. Universal upgrades, which include gems, can be put in any kind of equipment and offer less bonuses than upgrade components that are type-restricted. Infusions, which can only be placed in gear that is ascended and legendary equipment are similar to gems, but offer higher bonuses and cannot be placed in any other type of equipment. Suffix upgrades are able to be placed in gathering tools, will add their names to the end of the name of the item they are connected to, for example adding the word Glyph to a Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor would change it to a Canthan Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor.

If a player upgrades a gathering tool, and then replaces glyphs with another glyph the old one will be returned to their inventory. If you replace another upgrade component, it will be destroyed, with the exception for inscriptions, which can be freely swapped.

Leveling

The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some significant changes from earlier versions. Gear is now broken down into tracks and items can be upgraded a specific number of times before they're "leveled out." The costs for upgrading increase with each level, but the materials required do not. This allows players to focus their efforts on a couple of essential items and maximize their impact, instead of spreading the upgrade costs across multiple items.

This allows the item to receive upgraded components and a higher chance of success. This bonus is known as the Artisan's Energy. It will reset to 0 if an upgrade fails or increases when the upgrade succeeds.

Once a piece is upgraded to its highest level it is able to gain affixes which will boost its attributes. The number of affixes that are available is determined by the item's class. Prior to this, some upgrade items were given priority affixes which made them easier to roll. This meant that you would receive the stats that mattered most to your build often than other. This included things like the armor's total armor, thorns and control impaired duration reduction stats or the weapon's bonus attack speed and critical strike chance.

This has changed since the latest patch. Priority affixes have been removed, and all upgrades have the identical chance of rolling each stat. This can be a good or a bad thing, depending on your needs and expectations from your equipment.

Each upgraded item can have a unique bonus that boosts the power of the item upgrades by a fixed percentage or a flat amount. These bonuses are rolled over the usual affixes. The more you improve an item, the greater your chance of getting the bonus of your choice.

The game also comes with number set that grants an extra bonus when three or four upgraded items from the set are placed on a unit. This is a good method of giving an individual character more power without spending a ton of money.

Many players reroll their weapons and gear, especially in the early stages. This is because rerolling could offer a quicker route to becoming a strong character which allows them to achieve high tiers and progress the game faster.

Sets

Sets are groups of elements that can be arranged in a variety of ways. They can have different sizes, have no elements at all or contain a single element. They are useful for organizing data or sorting information. They can also be used to study patterns. Sets can be classified in many ways, such as by size and shape.

The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom offers a wide range of upgradeable set items. Some items are worth upgrading, while others aren't. Armor sets that provide high defense or set bonuses are typically worth upgrading. However, weapon upgrades often do not improve the item's stats much as compared to their counterparts in purple. This makes them less appealing to upgrade in the event that your collection of weapons and armor pieces is already large.

Set items can be upgraded to include specific tools that are suitable for certain builds. Guillaume's Face face and Aldur's Advance boots are two examples of this. Both were upgraded from Exceptional Winged Helm and Exceptional Mirrored Boots respectively, boosting their defense by 217 to 321 (Strength requirement and Level requirement were increased as well).

Upgrades can also be made to bring certain items up to the level of the levels. For example the Immortal King set has a vast range of levels, ranging between 29 and 76. Upgrades to lower level items can enhance their defense, and improve their performance in terms of damage.

To see if an item is worth upgrading, players can click the Upgrade button on the screen of their character. The attributes of the item upgrader kit will be displayed as well as any necessary items. To upgrade the No-mouth Face, for example, 1.1K Scrap Materials will be required, 250 Enchanted Dust and 5 Glowing Shards. Alternately, players can visit the Leaderboard or Golden vendor in Cyrodiil to see the upgrade requirements of specific items.

In general, weapons and armor have a higher trade value when they are fully updated. Particularly for weapons with spell/weapon damage glyphs and are upgraded to gold is recommended as it will provide a significant increase in their performance.
