graco-sweet2sleep-bedside-bassinet-crib-Bedside cots (also known as co-sleepers and bassinets) are designed to allow parents to sleep close to their baby at night without fear of SIDS. They are recommended for up to 6 months, after which your baby is ready to transition to an actual crib.

MFM home tester Mehack was impressed that this model features a bassinet that can be lifted off to use in the home and the ability to rock manually. It was easy to set up, and came with its own travel bag.

Size

Cots and cot beds vary in terms of size in size, with cots smaller than beds for cots. Cots can also convert into toddler beds. However they are typically used by children up to the age of three. There are two sizes of wooden cots - big and standard, which can be converted into a toddler bed or cot. If you'd like your child (or children) to be able to sleep in the larger cot, it's an excellent option to select the larger size.

MFM mom home tester Jasmine liked that this bedside cot was slightly larger than the Moses basket but not too large for the space of her baby's. She says it's easy to get her baby in and out for feeding or calming and that the quality is excellent, compared with many she's encountered that feel cheap and flimsy.

Another home tester, Emily, likes how versatile the Maxi-Cosi Lora is it's a drop-off bassinet that you can move around the home, and it's a blast too. It also has an option to tilt the reflux upwards and a machine-washable liner that breathes. It was also shortlisted for the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot or Moses Basket category. Contrary to some International or European cot brands, the Lora can fit South African cot mattresses so you don't have to buy an entirely new mattress each time your baby grows. It requires a specific bedding set (60x120cm). You can find the right mattress for your cot here.

Height

When you are choosing a cot for your bed be sure to choose one that can be raised up to a height that is comfortable for feeding your the baby. It must also be lower to a level that is not in the way so you can lift up your baby towards you to feed them at night or to soothe him. This feature is particularly useful in the event of recovering from a C-section. For example the Next2me and Tutti Bambini cots can be adjusted to an elevation of 58cm. the Snuzpod 3 goes up to 63cm, and the Knuma Huddle up to 70cm.

Another thing to think about is how low you want the cot's base to be. While some moms find it easier to lift their babies out of standard Moses baskets at the lowest height, others prefer having a higher base that gives them more stability. One of our mum testers said that the Joie Roomie Glide was aflux incline, and rocking feature. It's bigger than other cribs for bed that we've tested, however it folds down into its travel bag, making it relatively compact when it's not in use.

MFM mom home tester Leya loved the practicality of this crib for bed, she explained how it was created with parents and babies in mind. It is very easy to move and extremely sturdy. The swivelling base of the bassinet is amazing because it allows you to move the bassinet from side-to-side and one of its sides can be opened down to facilitate access especially for new mothers who are recovering from their C-sections,' she added.

Safety

The main safety feature of a large bedside cot is that it is able to be moved up or down to allow parents to reach their child when they need to feed them, comfort them or change their nappy. This makes it perfect for new mothers recovering from the c-section. Choose a model that lets you lower one side with the press of a button, so you can easily lift your baby without getting out of the bed. This is especially important as your baby gets older and more mobile. It is also important to avoid adding anything to the cot that increases the risk of suffocation or injury, such as pillows and duvets. These can cause babies to overheat.

The CPSC's NPR included 24 incidents that were attributed to product issues, such as gaps between the bedside baby bed sleeper and the adult bed (12 incidents); fabric-sided enclosed openings (11 incidents); consumer misassembly or missing components (6 incidents) and miscellaneous other product-related issues (9 incidents).

In its NPR the CPSC considered the possibility of adding more requirements to bedside sleepers. For example the products would need to meet the minimum height requirements for bassinets or at a minimum, the maximum height requirements for the lowered rail. The CPSC decided, Large Bedside crib however, that these requirements weren't efficient or effective in reducing number of instances in which infants are entrapped by a bedside rail and an adult bed.

A majority of the incidents mentioned in the NPR concerned multi-use bedside sleepers that can be transformed into other types of equipment, like play yards or bassinets. A number of commenters suggested that the CPSC include in the proposed rule a different provision for multiuse bedside sleepers to allow them to meet the minimum side-height requirement for bassinets using an attachment that can be permanently connected or disconnected when the product is not being used as an actual bassinet.

The CPSC is currently reviewing the comments and other suggestions received in response to the NPR regarding bedside sleeping. The Commission will be examining these comments when it decides on the final rule which is expected to be published in November of 2021.
