Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita's Personality

They are not only an excellent pet, but is also a great companion for children.

Despite their adorable nature, these birds are very loud and can be a nuisance to those who live near. They can make high-pitched screech-calls and ear-piercing calls, which can be disruptive in condominiums and apartments, or near young children who might be scared by their roar.

The species is also monomorphic. Males and females are difficult to differentiate. For this reason, DNA testing is the only method to determine sex. Once the birds' sex is established and breeding can begin, breeding can commence.

Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets require training to master commands and phrases. Lolita's Care

For decades, activists have been pleading for Lolita's retirement from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 hit movie Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's return to the wild, marine biologists hoped Lolita might have a similar fate. Unfortunately, she never got the chance to go back to the ocean.

The captors of Lolita, referred to as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a vet and continued to put her at risk. They undermine her health by making her perform for tourists, overexerting her with head-first dives that expose her to chlorine, making her lose weight and harming her immune system. Additionally, they put her in an incredibly small tank that is less than one-and-a half times the size of her natural habitat.

Lolita's Diet

As with any species of animal in captivity, a captive gold and blue buy macaw's health is based on a balanced diet. According to the most recent update on the Friends of Lolita site, she eats 115 pounds of salmon a day, in addition to capelin, herring, and squid.

Miami Seaquarium, and in particular Lolita has been critiqued for the quality of the food they provide to killer whales. The orca, who was 57 years old, was rescued from Puget Sound in 1970, and even though the species is threatened in the wild, she lives in an aquarium that many consider too small for her.

Lolita's Health

While her beauty is evident However, her health continues to deteriorate. Animal welfare groups have expressed concerns about her and want to see that she is returned to the wild. Lolita who has been living at the Miami Seaquarium in Miami since 1970 was a popular tourist attraction there for decades. She has battled chronic illnesses and an infection that left her in a fragile state.

The Miami Seaquarium, now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not shared information on Lolita's current condition. Friends of Toki, a non-profit organization, has published monthly updates on her health and well-being on their website. They show that she is aging rapidly and her health is deteriorating.

It is unclear what specific health issues are affecting the orca, as her captor is not obliged to disclose this information. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies from Sea World. This shows that kidney diseases often play an integral factor in the death of orcas in captivity.

Despite the continuing health concerns of Lolita, many people believe that she could be closer than ever to a wild life. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has pledged to transfer the whale from her tank to her natural waters in the Pacific.

The move comes following years of public pressure, including from PETA and PETA, which demanded that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a seaside sanctuary where she could swim deep in the ocean, and possibly even meet the orca thought to be her mother. The plans were not enough to save the whale who died on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney issue.
