Evolution Korea

Up until recently, the Korean scientific community resisted engaging with the creationists out of fear of giving the movement more credibility. However, silence is no any longer an option.

The STR has been fighting to eliminate the content on evolution from textbooks, including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestral bird. This is only one example of how the development paradigm has evolved.

What is Evolution?

The theory of evolution is a branch of science that explains the evolution of genetic characteristics over time. The theory is based on the fact that living things adapt to their environments, which can cause variations in genes or even whole genomes. These changes could over generations result in the development of new species. Natural selection is the most popular theory of evolution. It describes how individuals who have advantages survive and reproduce more than those with disadvantageous ones. This differing reproduction may be a catalyst to the emergence and evolution of new species.

The word "evolution", which comes from Latin for revealing or unrolling, has been used in many different ways as the concept has developed in both science and in other fields. Some early evolutionists, like Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that existing species evolved into new species in a certain way. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist disciple who invented the term "transmutation" to describe this theory. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, challenged the idea of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy's student.

Evolutionary biologists define it more recently as a process in which living creatures develop traits to increase their chances of surviving or producing offspring. Over time, this genetic variability can lead to the emergence of entirely new physical or biological functions in a population. This shift in gene frequency is known as natural selection and it is the main driver of evolutionary changes. Other changes that aren't genetic, such as an increase in muscle mass from exercise or diet, can't be considered to be evolution since they aren't passed on to the next generation.

Creationists have a tendency to use the argument that evolution is controversial even though it has been proven valid by a multitude of scientific tests and that it has stood the test of time. They claim that the theory should not be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories over evolution in textbooks for high schools. This includes the removal of references about the evolutionary history of humans and Archaeopteryx - a feathered dinosaur that is believed to be the bird's ancestor.

Why is Evolution Important?

Evolution explains the origins of Earth and all living species. It also serves as a basis of biology and helps scientists to understand how living organisms work and grow. Evolution also shows how various species are connected. Scientists study evolution to understand the natural world, and also to make important discoveries including the development of new drugs.
