How to Replace an audi a1 key G28 Engine Speed Sensor
In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.
The sensor serves as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can trigger spark and injectors according to the situation.
If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of a chain stretch or a jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing. However the code will not appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).
Testing can be a bit difficult since there are two connector pins, and they perform different functions but the most effective way to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully functional, it should read around 1000 ohms. Look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing problems with this part.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a significant reduction in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, 3 were drenched with gazoline the fourth one was dry. I placed a tissue over each hole in the injector and when i start the engine without sparks, [Redirect Only] the 3 that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one remains shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 i get 0ohm. I'm assuming the issue is in another place.
I also tried to reset PID without success. The audi car key cover will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it is running fine with the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.
I'm not certain what to do, as i believe that i've completely ruled out all other possibilities. But i'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please chime in! TIA!
