In the past the scientific community in Korea has refrained from engaging with the creationists, fearing that doing so could boost the credibility of the group. The silence is no longer an alternative.

The STR has been fighting to remove information about evolution from textbooks including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestor bird. This is just one aspect of the way in which the development paradigm has evolved.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a scientific theory that explains the evolution of genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adapt to their environments which can result in changes in genes or even complete genomes. These changes could over generations lead to the creation of new species. The most popular theory of evolution is called natural selection, which describes the process through which those with favorable characteristics live and reproduce more often than those with less favorable characteristics. This variation in reproduction could, over time, lead to the emergence and evolution of new species.

The term "evolution", which comes from Latin for unrolling or revealing has been used in a variety of different ways as the concept has developed in both science and in other fields. Early evolutionists, such as Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that the existing species changed into other species in a predetermined fashion. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire, Lamarck's embryologist disciple who coined the term "transmutation" to describe this view. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 opposed this notion and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the notion that existing species evolve into new species in a gradual and predictable way.

In recent years, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living things develop characteristics that enhance their chances of survival or ability to produce offspring. In time this genetic variation can result in the development of completely new biological functions or physical traits in a population. Natural selection is the process that drives the majority of evolutionary changes. However, non-genetic changes such as the increase in muscle mass due to diet or exercise can't be considered examples of evolution since they're not passed on to future generations.

Creationists have a tendency to use the argument that evolution is controversial in spite of the fact that it has been proven to be accurate by thousands of scientific tests and that it has been tested over time. The YECs are perhaps the most well known type of creationist and they believe that God created the universe exactly as described in the Bible. YECs believe that the biblical account of the creation's six days is literal and that the universe and the life on Earth was created only recently.

OECs might not be as well-known however their beliefs are as intense as the YECs. OECs believe that the universe as well as Earth are billions-of-years old and believe that evolution is a myth.

Both types of creationism reject the notion that scientific principles like natural selection and abiogenesis are able to explain the origins of life on Earth. Certain scientists and educational institutions are however more flexible and allow both creationism and evolution to be incorporated into their curricula.

What is Creationism?

When people think of creationism typically think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolutionist movement. Publishers of high-school textbooks recently announced that they will remove references to evolution in their textbooks. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body which is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR) is the one who has led this effort. The STR has won its first victory by removing from textbooks examples of the evolution and ancestor of an bird, the Archeopteryx. Its next target is to eliminate portions of Darwin's notorious finch-research and also on human evolution.

STR claims to have the support of 4,000 families as well as individual members. Its mission, it states is to cleanse the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which portrays a negative view for students. It also seeks to counter the influence of American creationists in the country. A survey of trainees in biology found that half didn't believe in evolution. On August 7 and 8, 1993, coinciding with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six foreign lecturers including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin presented to thousands of people. KACR and its members have been giving lectures on creation science in major seminaries as well. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
