Evolution Korea

South Korea's democratic system is vulnerable to populist impulses. However, it is more stable than one would expect.

The country is searching for an alternative development model. A Confucian culture that values respect for the ancestors and gendered family relations continues to influence the society. However, there are signs that a secularist culture is emerging.

Origins

In the prehistoric era the ancestors of today's Koreans were able to survive by hunting and gathering wild food. Around 10,000 years ago they began to cultivate millet and beans as well as other crops. They also raised livestock, and also made furs. They formed tribal states in Manchuria, and then on the Korean peninsula. They also established a metallurgy industry, producing iron tools and bronze. They also traded with other countries and introduced block printing to Japan along with styles of art and a written language and paper making.

In 2333 BCE Gojoseon came into existence in the southern part of the peninsula. This state adopted Chinese culture that included Confucian Philosophy and Buddhism. During this period the people of Buyeo joined Gojoseon. Gojoseon was a state that was hierarchical where the monarch and other senior officials were members of the aristocracy of the land, whereas the rest of its population were peasants. The state collected taxes from these people, and sometimes forced them to serve in the army or to build fortifications.

At the close of the period, the state of Baekje was established by Onjo who was a prince of Goguryeo and 에볼루션바카라사이트 [Full Piece of writing] the son of Jumong who was the founder of Goguryeo. This new kingdom expanded its territory to the southwest of the peninsula, and was at war with Goguryeo and China's commandos in the region. Baekje adopted Confucian ideas into its state beliefs system in 1390 CE, and introduced the male-centric concept of filiopiety into a doctrine. Under the guise of filiopiety fathers were accountable to their families, and had to be respected and obeyed by all people, even their grandchildren and children.

Goryeo, who ruled from 918 to 1392 CE gave the world the Hangul alphabet built on the patterns created by the mouth during pronunciation. This greatly improved communication and led to a boom in the writing of Buddhist text. Woodblock printing and movable type were also improved. It was during this period that the Samguk sagi, also known as 'History of the Three Kingdoms' first appeared in 1145 CE.

Early evidence of human settlements can be seen in the form of graves that were lined with stones, and adorned with precious items such as amazonite jewelry being buried alongside the dead. Megalithic structures, also known as dolmens, constructed from massive single stones, are prevalent throughout the country.

Gojoseon was the first political state to be recognized in the first half of the 1st millennium BCE. The peninsula was ruled by several states in the Three Kingdoms period (57 BCfrom 635 CE) including Baekje Goguryeo, Baekje, actors that appear to be shaping these processes.

Creationism in Korea

In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. Creationists have made strides in promoting their beliefs to this segment. A survey in 2009 found that nearly three-quarters of respondents did not believe in the theory of evolution. Of the respondents, 41% believed that there was no scientific evidence to support the theory; 39% believed it was contrary to their religious beliefs, and 17 percent said they didn't know what it meant. This level of doubt is similar to that of the United States where a similar number do not believe that humans evolved from lesser advanced species of life.

In the past, the anti-evolutionist campaign in Korea was primarily focused on the education of students and in bringing Christ to them. In 1980 the year 1980, a four-day creation science seminar was held in Seoul during the World Evangelization Crusade. Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Gish of ICR as the keynote speakers. This event was attended by an audience of scientists, professors and church leaders.

The success of this event led to the founding of the Korea Association of Creation Research (KACR) on January 31st, 1981. The inauguration meeting was widely covered in the national press, including The Korea Times and Chosun Ilbo, and it attracted a lot of attention.

KACR began publishing a monthly newsletter called CREATION, which covered its activities and published articles on the scientific evidence supporting creationism. It also translated film strips and slides from ICR and also some books on creationism that were already published outside of Korea. KACR members gave lectures across the country in churches and universities.

One example of a KACR success story took place at the KAIST university in Seoul. There, enough students were interested in creationism that they raised enough money and support needed to build a small museum on campus showing creationist models of fossils and other exhibits.

In addition to its public activities, KACR publishes a bimonthly news magazine called CREATION, that covers topics related to creation science, and it has sponsored a series of lectures by ICR staff. It also has local branches that conduct seminars and give talks to children in schools and community groups.
