How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor
In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 using a grey wire. The ECU uses this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.
The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, in order to activate the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails, the ECU will show an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and could indicate chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. However the code will not appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).
It can be a bit difficult to test because there are different pins on the connector and they all have different functions. The best way to do it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms if the sensor is in full operation. If you're experiencing issues with this component, look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at maximum speed, i noticed a huge drop in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs. Three were drenched with gazoline the fourth was dry. When i crank the engine without sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each of the injector holes, the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th stays closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. So i assume the problem is in another place.

However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows temperatures of -49c.
