Evolution Korea

Korean scientists don't take any risks when it comes to the fight over evolution. The Society for Textbook Revise has been fighting to remove the Archaeopteryx horses, the Archaeopteryx, and other symbols of evolution from textbooks.

Confucian practices that emphasize the world's success and the importance of education, continue to dominate the culture of the country. But Korea is seeking an entirely new model of development.

Origins

The growth of Iron Age cultures brought more sophisticated states to the Korean Peninsula, such as Goguryeo and Baekje. They all developed a distinct culture which blended with the influence of their powerful neighbours and they also adopted various aspects of Chinese culture, including Confucianism and Buddhism while shamanism remained to be practiced.

Goguryeo was the first of these kingdoms to implement its own form of government on the Korean people. It established its authority at the end of the 1st century and established a king-centered ruling system by the beginning of the 2nd century. Through a series of wars it eliminated the factions that were loyal to the Han dynasty from the north of the peninsula. It also expanded its territory into Manchuria too.

It was during this period that a regional confederation grew up named Buyeo. The economy of Goryeo was stimulated by brisk trade with other countries which included the Song dynasty of China. Byeongnando was the gateway to Gaeseong which was the capital of Gaeseong. Traders came from Central Asia, Arabia and Southeast Asia. Silk and medicinal herbs were among the goods they brought.

Around 8,000 BCE the Koreans began establishing permanent settlements and cultivating cereal crops. At the time, Gija, a Shang dynasty prince from China is believed to have introduced high-culture to Korea. The roots of this anti-evolution stance are complex and diverse. Some researchers suggest that it is due to religious belief, while others point to an increasing prevalence of anti-intellectualism, which has been exacerbated by growing political elite fragmentation along ideologies, regions, class, and gender. The one-sided populism, supported by powerful conservative think tanks, business interests and other influential organizations, has also contributed to the public's distrust of the scientific community.

In the end, the numerous weaknesses identified in this study highlight the urgent need for targeted policy interventions to preemptively minimize these vulnerabilities. As Seoul continues to work towards becoming a more cohesive urban environment, these insights can be used to inspire an unifying push for greater inclusivity in its policies.
