Handle

Over time, uPVC window handles and locks may be damaged by wear and tear, accidental or intentional damage. It can be that the handle or lock becomes difficult to open or close or not locked at all. If this happens, it could be tempting to replace the entire window unit, however this isn't always necessary. In many cases an upgrade to the front door handle repair or lock is enough.

The espagnolette style is the most common uPVC window handle. The handle has a spindle that extends from the handle and slots into a gearbox that controls the multipoint locking mechanism inside the window. When replacing a uPVC window handle it is a good idea to use screws with cover caps to ensure the screws are secure and protect them from corrosion. It is also possible to use a washer or spacer to ensure a better seal. A screw cap in place will also prevent debris and water from entering the handle and cause damage.

After taking the handle out of the window, it's an ideal idea to clean both the spindle and the threaded part of the bolt. This will ensure that the handle fits and functions correctly and also stop dirt from entering the multipoint lock.

It's now time to put in the new uPVC handle. It is essential to follow the directions provided with the new handle and take a look at the old one before you begin in order to understand how to proceed. The process is usually very easy. It is also important to note that if you're replacing the uPVC handle with a cockspur (also called an Espag handle) you must examine the step height of the window in order to determine the appropriate size of door handle repair. The step height refers to the distance from the base or frame of the window up to where the cockspur's nose handle sits when installed.

Alternatively, you can determine the length of the spindle on your existing handle to determine the size you require for a replacement.

The type of handle you choose for your window will determine the type of crank mechanism you need for your casement and windows with awnings. Espag handles have a mental spindle in the back that is connected to the frame of the window and is the motor that drives the mechanism. Cockspur handles are fitted with pegs that are fixed in place by three or even four screws which are set into the sash and frame.

Once you've found the appropriate replacement, it's easy to fit. Remove any screws that attach to the trim from the casement cover and carefully lift the cover off to expose the insides of the window operator (Photo 1). Compare the new lever with the previous one and remove any trim screws that have rusted. Then screw the replacement to the window frame, replace any screws that were damaged or bent, and then place the casement cover back over the mechanism.
