Pragmatics and Semantics

A lot of contemporary philosophical theories focus on semantics. For instance, Brandom focuses on linguistic meaning (albeit from a pragmatist perspective).

Others adopt a more holistic approach to pragmatics, like relevance theory, which seeks to explore the understanding processes involved in an utterance made by a listener. However, this method tends to neglect other elements of pragmatism, such as epistemic debates over truth.

What is pragmatism, exactly?

Pragmatism is a philosophical approach that provides a different perspective to continental philosophy and analytic philosophy. It had a profound effect on the fields of inquiry from theology of philosophy to philosophy of science but also on ethics, politics and philosophy of language. The pragmatic maxim is at the core of classical pragmatism. It is a principle that clarifies the meaning of hypotheses by examining their 'practical implications', or their implications for the experiences of specific situations. Pragmatists also developed a variety of theories and methods including those in semiotics and philosophy of language.
